Cairns is a regional city located in the state of Queensland, Australia. The city itself was first formed in 1876. Named after William Wellington Cairns, the city
was initially used to serve miners going towards Hodgkinson River goldfield but later declined in importance when an easier route was discovered from Port Douglas.
Later however, Cairns developed into a railhead and major port for the exportation of important products such as sugar cane, gold, precious metals. The future of the
city is secured and with the city rapidly expanding with a population of an estimated 128,000, the city is reliant on its sugar and tourism industries.
The City of Cairns lies approximately 1720 kilometres away from Brisbane and further away about 2500 kilometres from Sydney by road.
Cairns is a well known travel hot spot for tourists around the world due to its tropical climate and nearby many attractions. The Great Barrier Reef, a world
famous tourist attraction of Australia can be reached by boat in less than an hour.
The Daintree National Park and Cape Tribulation is about 130 kilometres north of Cairns and is also a very popular area for travellers seeking a tropical rainforest.
The place act as a starting point for those who wish to explore Cooktown, Cape York Peninsula, and the Atherton Tableland.
